“This being our first experience with family photos, our experience couldn’t have been better. Sam is an excellent photographer and also very relaxed to spend time with. We found the photoshoot experience fun and as well as very professional. Sam has lots of experience in getting the best out of young children. The combination of these qualities is wonderful! She has a wonderful eye for capturing unusual and unexpected moments. Her prints are some of our most valued possessions as a family.”

FAQ
What should we wear for family photos?
I recommend choosing outfits that coordinate rather than match exactly. Soft, neutral colors and timeless styles tend to photograph beautifully and keep the focus where it belongs: on your family. Once you're booked, I'll send guidance and help you choose outfits that work well together and fit your session location. The goal isn't for everyone to look identical, it's for your family to look and feel like yourselves.
How long does a family session take?
Most family sessions are about an hour, but I don't watch the clock or rush families through the experience. Every family is different. Some children need a few extra minutes to warm up and some families want a little more time to explore a location. My goal is to create beautiful images and an enjoyable experience, so I allow the flexibility needed to make that happen.
What is the best location for family photos in Swansboro or Emerald Isle?
That depends on the look you love most. If you're dreaming of coastal scenery, Emerald Isle offers beautiful beaches and sunset views. If you're vacationing, I'd recommend we travel straight to your rental for your convenience. If you'd prefer something with more greenery, historic charm, or a quieter setting, there are several beautiful locations throughout Swansboro and the surrounding Crystal Coast area. Because I was born and raised here, I can help guide you to the location that best fits your family and compliments the style of your home as wall art.
When is the best time of year for family photos in Swansboro and Emerald Isle?
For beach portraits in Emerald Isle, my favorite months are April, May, September, October, and early November. The temperatures are usually more comfortable, the beaches are less crowded, and the light is beautiful. Fall, in particular, offers some of the most pleasant weather of the year along the coast.
As someone who was born and raised here, I also help families navigate the little things visitors may not know (from seasonal crowds to lighting conditions and weather patterns) so you can enjoy the experience and trust that we'll choose the right time and place for your session.
What if my child won't cooperate?
Honestly? Most parents tell me this before their session. The good news is that children don't have to sit perfectly still, smile on command, or look at the camera every second for us to create beautiful images. Some of my favorite photographs happen in between the posed moments and little bits of personality that make your child who they are.
I've photographed children for over a decade, including neurodivergent children, and I approach every session with patience and flexibility. As a parent of a teen with autism as well, my job is not to expect your children to perform. My job is to create an experience where genuine moments can happen naturally.
What happens if it rains on the Crystal Coast?
Living on the Crystal Coast means we learn quickly that weather forecasts are more of a suggestion than a guarantee. The good news is that I always build flexibility into my schedule for outdoor sessions. If conditions aren't safe or won't allow us to create beautiful images, we'll simply move to a backup date.
I keep a close eye on the forecast leading up to your session and will communicate with you every step of the way. There's no need to stress about watching the weather yourself.
How do I choose the right family photographer?
The right photographer is about more than beautiful images.
Look for someone whose work you love, but also someone who makes you feel comfortable, guides you through the process, and creates an experience that fits your family's needs.
Ask yourself:
Do I feel connected to their style?
Will they help me plan?
Do they know how to work with children?
Do they help with what happens after the session?
Can I picture these images hanging in my home years from now?
Family photographs become more valuable with time. Choosing a photographer is really about choosing the person you trust to preserve this season of your family's story. For many of my clients, that peace of mind is just as important as the photographs themselves.
What do families usually do with their photos afterward?
For many families, this is the reason they hire me. Most of my clients don't want hundreds of images sitting on a phone or computer. They want to enjoy their photographs every day.
Some families choose a custom album that tells their family's story. Others create a gallery wall, frame a favorite portrait above the fireplace, or display images throughout their home. During your ordering appointment, I'll help you choose artwork that fits your home, your style, and the way you want to enjoy these memories for years to come. My goal is for your photographs to become part of your everyday life, not something forgotten on a hard drive.
