There’s something special about family photos on the beach. Add a dog to the mix, and the whole session instantly becomes a little more relaxed, a little more playful, and a lot more personal.
Emerald Isle is one of my favorite places for beach portraits along the Crystal Coast, and it’s also a wonderful spot for families who want to include their dog in their photos. Dogs are part of the family, after all. They grow up alongside our children, join us on vacations, and somehow always know when something special is happening.
Over the years photographing families on Emerald Isle, I’ve found that sessions with dogs tend to be some of the most genuine. Kids loosen up, parents laugh a little more, and there’s always a moment where the dog decides the sand is the best thing they’ve ever experienced. If you’re thinking about bringing your dog to your Emerald Isle family photo session, a little preparation goes a long way.
First, bring a leash that photographs well. Neutral colors like tan, cream, or leather tend to blend naturally with the beach and don’t distract from the portraits. We’ll use the leash for safety when we need it, but there are moments where it can easily be hidden or removed for a few photos. It also helps to bring a small bag with a few essentials - treats, a favorite toy, and a towel. Dogs often get excited at the beach, and sometimes they need a quick break or a little encouragement to sit still for a few seconds.
Timing matters, too. Most Emerald Isle beach photo sessions take place in the evening, close to sunset. The light is softer, the beaches are quieter, and it’s typically cooler for both children and pets. Golden hour along the Crystal Coast creates that warm glow that makes beach portraits feel timeless. And the truth is, perfection isn’t really the goal.
Some of the best images from sessions with dogs are the in-between moments—the dog running through the sand, a child hugging their furry best friend, or everyone laughing when the dog decides to shake off water right next to the family. Those are the memories that feel real.
If you’re planning family photos on Emerald Isle, bringing your dog along can make the experience even more meaningful. Years from now, those images won’t just remind you of the beach. They’ll remind you of this season of life, when your whole family, four-legged members included, was together on the shore.
