Emerald Isle is one of the most beautiful places along North Carolina’s Crystal Coast for family portraits. With miles of shoreline, rolling dunes, and wide open skies, it offers a stunning backdrop for capturing families in a relaxed and natural way. One of the things I’ve learned over my lifetime is that while photographing families here not every beach access photographs the same. Small details like the direction of the sun, the height of the dunes, or how busy a beach access tends to be can make a big difference in how a photo session feels and looks.

That’s why local knowledge matters.

Some areas of Emerald Isle offer soft dunes and sea oats that create a beautiful, natural frame for family portraits before we ever step onto the sand. Others have wide, open stretches of beach where the horizon feels endless and the evening light reflects gently across the water. Certain locations are quieter and perfect for families with young children who may need a little extra space to explore and move freely.

Top five areas:

• Western Access next to the Islander
• Eastern Access
• Coast Guard Road (be aware there are no facilities and there is more walking involved)
• Come inland on sound side for less wind and a backdrop variety
• The best option: we come directly to you at your beach home for convenience!

Light is another important factor when planning beach photos.

Along the Crystal Coast, sunset sessions create the most flattering light for portraits. The sun drops toward the sound side of the island, and the evening glow creates warm, soft tones that make beach portraits feel timeless. Over the years, I’ve also learned that the best sessions happen when families can relax and enjoy the experience. Choosing the right location helps set the tone for that. When the setting feels calm, the light is beautiful, and the beach isn’t crowded, families can focus on simply being together.
