Bringing a new baby into the world comes with a lot of firsts—first snuggle, first sleepless night, first Google search at 3 a.m. about whether sneezes mean something. (Spoiler: they usually don’t.) Add “first professional photo session” to that list, and it’s completely normal to wonder, "How do I even get ready for this?"
The good news? It doesn’t have to be stressful. In fact, with a little prep (and a deep breath), it can be one of the most relaxed, joy-filled experiences of your early days as a family. Let’s walk through it together.
1. Book Early and Breathe Easy
If you’ve already booked your newborn session—hooray, you're ahead of the game! Ideally, sessions are scheduled during your second trimester with a "tentative" date based on your due date. Once baby arrives, we’ll finalize the real session date during that sweet 5-14 day window when they’re still snuggly and sleepy.
If you’re reading this and baby is already here, no panic necessary. Reach out. We’ll make it work, even if it means adjusting a few posing expectations for an older newborn. Every baby’s story deserves to be told.
2. Keep Baby’s Outfit Simple (and Skip the Pinterest Pressure)
You don’t need to show up with three suitcases of outfits and props. Honestly? The simpler, the better. I have everything we need—cozy wraps, sweet little outfits, timeless props. If you have a sentimental item you’d love to include (like a rainbow-themed piece or a special family heirloom), let’s plan it together! Otherwise, your job is just to bring the baby. (And snacks. Snacks are always a good idea.)
3. Feed Right Before Your Session
A full belly = a happy, sleepy baby. Try to feed your little one right before leaving the house or right when you arrive at the studio. We’ll also build in plenty of time for breaks because, let’s be honest, babies run the show—and we’re just here for it.
4. Dress Comfy and Casual (That Means You, Too)
If you’re going to be in a few photos (and I highly recommend you are—you exist in this story, too!), neutral, simple clothing works best. Think cozy sweaters, flowy dresses, solid colors that feel like you. No need to “dress up” if that’s not your thing—what matters is that you’re comfortable, relaxed, and fully present in the moment.
5. Trust the Process
Newborn sessions aren’t rushed. They’re slow, gentle, and totally baby-led. If your little one needs to feed, cuddle, or take a break? We roll with it. No judgment, no stress. I’m here to create a space where you feel just as taken care of as your baby.
At the End of the Day…
Preparing for your newborn session isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about showing up, loving on your baby, and trusting that we’re going to create something beautiful together—something that will live on your walls and in your heart for years to come.
You’ve got this, mama. And I’ve got you.
