One of the things I love most about photographing newborns is knowing that these tiny moments won’t stay tiny for long. The sleepy stretches, the curled-up fingers, the way they fit perfectly in their parents’ arms—those early days pass faster than anyone expects.
As a newborn photographer here in Swansboro, I see firsthand how meaningful it is for families to hold on to small pieces of this season. While professional photographs will always be my favorite way to preserve these memories, there are also a few simple keepsakes that parents can tuck away and treasure for years to come.
They don’t have to be elaborate. In fact, the simplest keepsakes are often the ones that mean the most later.

Years later, holding that tiny outfit again can instantly bring back the memories of those first days.
A Baby Memory Box
A simple memory box is one of the easiest ways to keep meaningful items together. Inside, you often include things like hospital bracelets, ultrasound photos, the first pair of socks, or small cards received when the baby was born. The box itself doesn’t have to be fancy. A simple wooden box or keepsake container works perfectly. What matters most is having a place where these small pieces of your baby’s story can live together.
A Favorite Children’s Book
Books make wonderful keepsakes because they often become part of family routines.
Many parents choose a special book to read during those early months. Over time, the pages may become worn, and the corners bent from being read again and again. That wear is part of the story.
One day, when your child is older, that same book becomes a reminder of the quiet nights, bedtime routines, and the comfort of being held close while the story was read.
Printed Photographs
Of course, my favorite keepsake will always be printed photographs. In a world where so many images live on phones and computers, there is something incredibly meaningful about seeing your baby’s portraits printed and displayed in your home. When children grow up seeing photos of themselves on the walls or in albums, it reminds them that they belong, that their story matters, and that these early moments were worth preserving.
That’s why I believe photographs shouldn’t just be stored digitally. They deserve to be held, displayed, and passed down.
The Small Things Matter
When families look back on their baby’s first year, it’s rarely the big events they remember most clearly.

The tiny socks.
The favorite book.
