And if you’re visiting Emerald Isle, NC, during the busy season, getting the session time you want with the photographer you trust? That takes a little planning ahead. As soon as school is out, Emerald Isle becomes a favorite gathering place for families. Whether it’s a once-a-year vacation or a long-standing tradition, this stretch of North Carolina coastline fills quickly with folks hoping to make memories. I photograph a lot of returning families each year, and they tend to book 2-6 months in advance, especially if they’re aiming for a specific date during a family reunion. If you wait until you arrive to inquire, there’s a good chance the week is already full.
Weather backup dates are built into OUR plan
Here on the coast, it’s not uncommon to have pop-up storms, unexpected wind, or full days of clouds. I always recommend building in a buffer - booking your session early in the week allows room to reschedule if the weather isn’t cooperating. But here's the thing: I can only block off extra days for confirmed sessions. If you reach out the week before you travel, I may not be able to offer that flexibility. Booking early allows us both the space to pivot when Mother Nature has other plans.

Travel plans don’t always go to plan
Flights get delayed. Houses get overbooked. Cousins catch colds. Booking your session early gives you room to shift details if your travel changes unexpectedly. Last-minute planning might leave you scrambling or worse - without photos altogether. If your vacation is already set, don’t wait to check “photos” off your to-do list. You’ll thank yourself later when everything else starts getting hectic.
For summer visits (June through August), I recommend booking no later than March or April. For spring break, Christmas week, or fall sessions, reach out at least 6–8 weeks in advance. If you’re planning a large family session (8+ people), booking early is even more important. We’ll need to coordinate timing, wardrobe, location access, and build in backup options.
