One of the most common questions I get after someone books a beach maternity session is about timing, and it is a question that matters more than most people initially realize. It is easy to assume that as long as you pick a day that works on the calendar, everything else will fall into place, but the truth is that both the stage of your pregnancy and the time of day we photograph play a huge role in how your session feels and how your images turn out.
When it comes to how far along you should be, I typically recommend scheduling your maternity session somewhere between 28 and 34 weeks. At that point, your belly has a beautiful, defined shape that photographs well, but you are usually still comfortable enough to move around, walk the beach, and enjoy the experience without feeling overly tired. Waiting too long can make the session physically harder than it needs to be, especially on the sand, while going too early can leave you feeling like you have not quite reached that stage you were hoping to capture.
Beyond timing within your pregnancy, the time of day we shoot is just as important, especially at the beach.
I photograph almost all of my beach maternity sessions in the evening, just before sunset, and that is a very intentional choice. The light during that time of day is softer, warmer, and more flattering in a way that cannot be replicated in the middle of the afternoon. Instead of harsh light sitting directly on your face and creating strong shadows, the evening light wraps around you gently, creating images that feel calm, clean, and timeless.
There is also a noticeable difference in how the session itself feels depending on the time of day. In the middle of the afternoon, the beach is typically brighter, busier, and often much hotter, which can make it harder to relax and settle into the experience. By contrast, the evening brings a quieter, more peaceful atmosphere. The crowds begin to thin out, the temperature becomes more comfortable, and the entire setting feels a little more still, which allows you to be more present in the moment instead of distracted by everything happening around you.
Another factor that often goes unnoticed is how the natural elements of the beach change throughout the day. The color of the sky shifts into tones that are far more complementary for photography. These are all small details that you may not think about when booking your session, but they are things I am always paying attention to behind the scenes so that your images feel as beautiful and effortless as possible.
Part of my role is guiding you through all of these decisions so that you do not have to carry that responsibility on your own. From helping you choose the right window in your pregnancy to selecting the best time of day for your session, I am always thinking about how to create an experience that feels comfortable for you while also producing images that will last well beyond this season. At the end of the day, this is about more than just getting the timing “right.” It is about creating space for you to slow down, step away from the rush of everyday life, and be present in a season that passes more quickly than most of us expect. When we choose the right time, both in your pregnancy and in the day itself, everything else falls into place in a way that feels natural instead of forced. That is when the experience becomes something you actually enjoy, and that is what always translates into the images.
