There is a very specific season of parenthood that I think gets overlooked when it comes to family photos, and it’s the season right before your kids leave home. Not the newborn stage when everyone knows life is changing by the minute. Not the early elementary years when every milestone feels obvious and worth documenting. I’m talking about the in-between season where your kids are teenagers or young adults, your family life still revolves around home, and yet you can feel that shift coming. Senior year is on the calendar. College tours are happening. One child is driving themselves places. Another has a job, sports, a social life, and a schedule fuller than yours. And before you know it, the rhythm of having everyone under one roof starts to change.

As a family photographer in Swansboro and Emerald Isle, I see this all the time. Parents will tell me they almost didn’t book because their kids are “too old” for family photos now, or because life has been so busy that it felt hard to coordinate. But, this is one of the most important times to do it because these are the family photos you will wish you took before they leave home. There’s something about this stage that feels ordinary while you’re in it. The carpool schedules, the sports practices, the after-school jobs, the constant running back and forth. It can feel like there will always be another summer, another break, another chance to get everyone together. When you’re raising older kids, the truth is that family life can change quickly.

One year you’re planning around football camp, dance, band practice, or work schedules, and the next you’re helping pack a dorm room or adjusting to a house that suddenly feels much quieter than it used to. And while of course your child doesn’t stop being your child when they leave, the version of your family that exists in those final years before adulthood is one worth remembering. That’s why I love photographing families with teenagers and older kids on the coast.

Whether we’re doing beach family photos in Emerald Isle or a family session closer to Swansboro, those sessions often carry a little more meaning than parents expect. They aren’t just about getting an updated photo for the wall or a Christmas card. They’re about documenting your family in a season that feels full, connected, and just a little bit fleeting. At this age, family photos often look different in the best possible way. We’re not chasing toddlers or trying to convince anyone to smile for a fruit snack. Instead, we get to lean into the relationships that have grown over time. The way your daughter laughs with you now that she’s almost grown. The way your son, who used to fit under your arm, now towers over you. The way siblings tease each other, roll their eyes at each other, and still somehow fall into familiar rhythms the second they’re together. Those little dynamics are part of your family story too, and they matter just as much as the tiny handprints and baby curls did years ago.

I also think there’s a misconception that once kids are older, family photos somehow matter less to them. In the moment, they may not be the ones asking for a session, but years from now, these are often the images that mean the most. They show a version of home that won’t stay the same forever. Not because something is wrong or sad, but because this is what growing up is supposed to do. It stretches a family into new shapes. Beautiful ones, but different ones all the same.

For a lot of the families I photograph along the Crystal Coast, vacation is actually the perfect time to make it happen. When everyone’s schedules are normally pulling in different directions, a week at the beach in Emerald Isle or a stay near Swansboro may be one of the only times everyone is in the same place and not rushing out the door. It creates a natural opportunity to pause and document this chapter before it changes. So if you’ve been putting off family photos because your kids are older now, or because coordinating everyone feels harder than it used to, I’d encourage you not to wait for a more convenient time. This season matters too. Maybe even more than you realize.

One day, when the bedrooms are quieter and everyone’s schedule no longer revolves around home, these are the family photos you’ll be so glad you took. If your family will be in Emerald Isle, Swansboro, or anywhere along the Crystal Coast, and you know this season is moving faster than you expected, I’d love to help you preserve it. Not in a stiff or overly posed way, but in a way that feels like your people, your season, and your story, exactly as it is right now.
