When most people think about family photography, they picture families with young children. New babies, toddlers, and preschoolers tend to get most of the attention when it comes to professional portraits. But after more than a decade of photographing families along the Crystal Coast, I've noticed something surprising: the families who often need photographs the most are the ones with teenagers.
The toddler years feel busy and memorable. Parents are constantly aware of milestones. First steps, first words, and first days of school are easy to recognize as moments worth preserving. The teenage years are different. Life becomes full of practices, games, part-time jobs, driver's education, college visits, and busy schedules. Families spend more time coordinating calendars than sitting together on the couch. Because of that, many parents stop prioritizing family portraits right when life is changing the fastest.
One day, your teenager is asking for a ride across town. The next, they're packing for college.
Those changes happen gradually until suddenly they don't. Many of the families I photograph in Emerald Isle and along the Crystal Coast tell me the same thing during their session. They aren't booking because they need a holiday card photo, they're booking because they realize this season of life won't last much longer.
Worried your teen won't want to participate? The reality is that teenagers are often easier to photograph than toddlers. Most carry on conversations. They have developed their own personalities, interests, and sense of style which they bring to the session. Family sessions become less about managing behavior and more about capturing genuine relationships.
As a parent of teens myself, I love watching parents interact with their teenagers during a session! The inside jokes, the teasing, and the confidence that has developed over years together tell a story that cannot be recreated later. For many families, these portraits become some of the most meaningful artwork in their home.
A framed family portrait hanging in the living room is not just a picture of what everyone looked like at a certain age. It becomes a reminder of a season and the final years before graduation. It's a reminder of the summers spent together at the beach while everyone still gathered under the same roof. That is especially true for families who vacation in Emerald Isle from Raleigh and other parts of North Carolina. Many return to the coast year after year, creating traditions that become part of their family's story. A portrait session during one of those trips can preserve a chapter of life that may never happen in quite the same way again.
As a photographer, I am not interested in creating images that sit on a hard drive. I want families to walk past their portraits every day and parents to see the faces that currently fill their home. I want teenagers to grow into adults and remember that they belonged to something important. If your family has teenagers, don't wait until graduation to think about family portraits. Years from now, you will be grateful you made time to preserve it.
