ACCESSIBLE BEACH LOCATIONS ON EMERALD ISLE: WHAT FAMILIES NEED TO KNOW
As a local mom, photographer, and someone who works closely with families of all abilities, I know just how important it is to find the right beach access - especially when you're hauling gear, wrangling little ones, or need mobility accommodations.
Whether you’re planning a sunset family session or a simple beach day during your Crystal Coast vacation, here are three locations to consider:
WESTERN OCEAN REGIONAL ACCESS
📍 Located at Islander Drive, Emerald Isle
Western Access is my top recommendation for families—and the one I use most often for sessions. Here’s why:
Ample parking (including handicap spaces)
Wide wheelchair-accessible ramp that’s easy to navigate with strollers or mobility devices
Covered lookout deck for relaxing views and a shady spot to take a break
It's clean, safe, and super convenient. I often shoot maternity and family sessions here because it’s both beautiful and accessible for everyone.
BOGUE INLET PIER
📍 100 Bogue Inlet Dr, Emerald Isle, NC 28594
This spot is popular for obvious reasons. The pier makes a beautiful backdrop for photos and is dynamic in composition. But keep in mind: it is crowded during peak hours and summer weekends! What does this mean? It means you are likely 'sharing space' with other families trying to take pictures as well in addition to walkers who are enjoying a stroll along the beach. This location requires patience and flexibility to shoot beneath the pier.

THE POINTE ACCESS
📍 Located at the western tip of Emerald Isle
This spot is popular for a reason—gorgeous natural scenery and less foot traffic make it a dream for photographers. But keep in mind: Parking is very limited, with only two handicap spaces available near the access ramp. It fills up quickly during peak hours and summer weekends!
If you’re set on a quieter backdrop for couples' photos and seniors and don’t mind arriving early and hiking a little, The Pointe can be a magical option. However it’s not the easiest for families with mobility needs.
